Carthage has been informed that the College will be receiving more than $40,000 in additional funding to continue our public astronomy education and outreach program in partnership with the Appalachian Mountain Club, Dartmouth College, and Rock Point School.

Through this program, Carthage students have had the opportunity to bring astronomy and nature education to several thousand members of the public each summer. 2014 marks the third year of the program and it is a testament to the program’s success that the National Science Foundation has committed to continued funding for the effort. We also anticipate additional equipment donations from Celestron, which has been supporting the project since its inception in 2012.

The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) is the nation’s oldest outdoors education and recreation organization in the country, offering more than 8,000 events each year to the public. The Carthage astronomy program has become one of the major offerings at the AMC, and has engaged the AMC membership and the public at facilities from northern New Jersey into the Maine woods, and everywhere in between.
