The Brainard Writing Center extended the deadline to submit an application to be a Writing Fellow next year and will now accept applications through Monday, Nov. 23. We can offer further flexibility for interested students who would like to apply but have had their schedule interrupted due to illness or quarantine. Please reach out to Heather Carroll at hcarroll@carthage.edu if you would like to make arrangements for a later due date.

Writing Center Fellows hold one-on-one writing conferences with members of the Carthage community. Fellows discuss strategies for writing in a variety of genres, including papers for Intellectual Foundations and writing-intensive courses across the curriculum; senior thesis; and personal essays for job, grad school, law school, or medical school applications.

Fellows write a summary of each conference that is often shared with faculty. They also collaborate in establishing and maintaining the center’s objectives and procedures and conducting outreach workshops.

Job Requirements

  • Be a strong writer
  • Enjoy working with people
  • Be responsible and reliable
  • Be able to work at least five hours per week
  • Be committed to helping others

We are seeking applicants from all majors (science and math majors too). All fellows take part in a full semester of paid training that includes reading, observing, and co-tutoring, so you don’t have to have tutoring experience.

To apply, please prepare an application package with the following:

  • Cover letter detailing why you would like to participate in the Writing Fellow program, what you expect to contribute to the Writing Center, and how you see participation in this program contributing to your academic and/or career goals.
  • Your best, recent example of academic writing done for a Carthage class. Do not submit creative or reflective writing. Remove your name from the paper.
  • The writing prompt (or short description of the assignment) your writing sample is responding to.
  • Two recommendations. At least one must be from a current Carthage faculty member familiar with your writing. Recommenders should complete our Google Form. Recommendations are due Monday, Nov. 30.
  • Submit the cover letter and sample essay with a prompt to the application form no later than Monday, Nov. 23. Your writing sample will be assessed by the Writing Center director and (anonymously) by three experienced Writing Fellows. This assessment is based on the Carthage College Writing Rubric.

Note: Though it is not required, you should consider taking part in a Writing Center appointment prior to your application. The experience of meeting with a Writing Fellow will provide an important perspective on what the Writing Center does.
