One issue many LGBTQIA+ students face on campus is using the restrooms. For non-binary/gender-non-conforming/gender-queer and Trans students, many of our academic buildings do not contain an inclusive restroom. Unfortunately, some members of our LGBTQIA+ student community have experienced harassment as a result of using the restroom of their gender identity. To combat this, Professor Sara Jensen has brought to our attention the #IllGoWithYou project.

#IllGoWithYou allies go into bathrooms and other spaces with people who may be afraid or concerned about their safety. A #IllGoWithYou ally offers support, buffering, and non-violent assistance when asked. For more information on what is and is not asked of a #IllGoWithYou ally, you can visit the project’s website.

If you want to be a #IllGoWithYou ally for members of our Carthage LGBTQIA+ community, please fill out the #IllGoWithYou Google form.

Prof. Jensen has ordered buttons allies can wear on a jacket or put on a backpack and stickers for an office or laptop. Once you fill out the form, we can get you your button or sticker and add your information to a list of faculty and staff allies, along with your office location, nearest restroom, and the bathroom you feel comfortable entering.
