Lauren Patt ’20 recently published her paper “Understanding best practices: A look into homelessness related alcoholism” in the Journal of Student Research. The article reviews the scientific literature on alcoholism interventions with homeless persons and highlights current best practice when working with such populations

The work was inspired by a field experience she had during her senior year at Carthage. Ms. Patt successfully completed one field placement with the Allendale Association as part of her psychological science thesis. However, she wanted to gain additional field experience in a new environment, which led to her working with the Kenosha Shalom Center — an organization that provides resources such as food, housing, and guidance to families in need in the Kenosha community. Although her field placement was cut short due to the pandemic, Ms. Patt continued to think about the experience and wrote her review paper as part of an independent study with Professor Anthony Barnhart.

In the fall, Ms. Patt is starting graduate school at UW-Parkside, working toward a master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling.
