Update from the COVID-19 Committee: Mask requirements inside residence halls
The COVID-19 Committee sent the following email to Carthage students on Oct. 27, 2021.
As previously communicated, the COVID-19 Coordinating Committee continues to meet on a regular basis to monitor the climate during the pandemic. We are writing with an update to the current #StaySafeCarthage guidelines.
The campus currently has a 84 percent vaccination rate, and we have seen a low rate of positive cases on campus thus far this semester. Kenosha County has also seen a decline in weekly cases. However, it is important to remember that the City of Kenosha’s current vaccination rate is only 52 percent, and parts of the city continue to have very high rates of infection. Based on the combination of this information, and in response to the Student Government’s recent resolution, we have decided to implement the following change to the campus’ masking policy:
Residence halls will now be mask-optional for vaccinated students.
Masks are still required in all other campus buildings and on the campus shuttle for all students, regardless of vaccination status.
If we have a lack of compliance in spaces that still require proper mask-wearing, a high case count for campus, or return to critical threshold in Kenosha County, we will return to requiring everyone to be fully masked in all indoor spaces. Should campus and Kenosha continue with low case counts, we will communicate about additional modifications of the #StaySafeCarthage guidelines.
We know it is now cold and flu season; if you do not feel well, we encourage you to use a mask in the residence halls and to call the Health and Counseling Center to discuss options.
In order to make sure that everyone has a mask, we will distribute new masks to students, faculty, and staff this week. Residential students will receive a new Firebirds mask through their floor RA; and commuter/off-campus students, faculty, and staff can pick up a new mask from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, at the Clausen Center Atrium and the Lentz Hall Lobby.
