Under the guidance and training of Professor Darwin Tsen and TLE Linfeng Li throughout the May Term, three Carthage Chinese majors participated in the region’s most prestigious Chinese competition, the Midwestern Universities Chinese Speech Contest — co-hosted by Northwestern University, Loyola University, and North Central College.

James Ritchhart ’23 won Bronze in his speech category and delivered a blisteringly funny comedy skit that portrayed the challenges of learning the language. Katherine Kiser ’23 won Bronze and sang a wonderful ukulele cover of Chinese indie singer Ah Si’s “Don’t Forget to Treat Me When You have a Girlfriend.” Mikolas Greguska ’24 won Silver for his speech and read a Chinese translation of Robert Frost’s “The Road Not Taken” against the backdrop of some soothing lo-fi beats. These students have learned and improved so much since their last competition.

Please join us in congratulating their excellent efforts!
