Professor Fatih Harpci Professor Fatih Harpci, chair of the Religion Department, is featured in a new book. His chapter “The Myth of Islam as Inherently Violent” has appeared in “The (De)Legitimization of Violence in Sacred and Human Contexts” published by Palgrave Macmillan.

The chapter identifies and contextualizes the views on violence found in the Islamic sacred scriptures. It also demonstrates how Muslims continue to develop their tradition through application in the contemporary world, with both violent and non-violent results. The chapter illustrates the clear connection between religion and violence, yet at the same time, it clearly asserts that religion is often used to legitimize acts of violence that originate from other sources.

Congratulations, Prof. Harpci!
