Ukraine Charity Concert: ?We Save Lives?
All Stories

A Carthage graduate student from Ukraine is organizing a series of streaming online benefit concerts to aid fellow music teachers in her war-ravaged homeland.

Sasha Divain, a voice instructor with a private studio in Kyiv, is here studying toward a Master of Music (M.M.) in music theatre vocal pedagogy. But many of her peers have remained in Ukraine since the Russian invasion began in February, and even those who safely evacuated have temporarily lost their main source of income.

Professor Corinne Ness, who directs the M.M. program, has established a GoFundMe account in tandem with the concert series. Donations will provide food and other basic necessities for Ukrainian music teachers.

Recorded performances will feature Carthage students and professional singers from several countries, covering a wide mix of vocal styles like R&B, jazz, pop, and music theatre.

The next concert will be released Sunday, May 8, on the YouTube page of the International Association of Teachers of Singing — a professional organization Sasha leads in Ukraine. Viewers can take part in a live chat beginning at 11 a.m. Central time that day.
