Carthage welcomed jazz specialist GT Allen this week for a residency on April 26 and 27. As part of the residency, students in the Master of Music program in music theatre vocal pedagogy had an opportunity to coach with Mr. Allen and learn the “ins and outs” of jazz vocal style.

Jazz musician GT Allen came to campus for a residency in April 2022. Mr. Allen is an acclaimed contemporary voice specialist who recently won the 2021 International Sarah Vaughan competition — according to Downbeat, the first male winner. “GT Allen is an exceptional artist” said Professor Corinne Ness, program director for the graduate program in music theatre. “He was able to elevate the work of our students to a next level by honing in on the details and encouraging the students to take risks.”

Mr. Allen keeps a busy performance calendar in addition to his teaching residencies. He has performed with the late David Baker and the Smithsonian Jazz Orchestra Masterworks, and is regularly performing in the Chicago jazz scene. A genre-crossing artist, Mr. Allen has also performed as a countertenor with Los Angeles Opera, and is a Grammy-nominated gospel lead vocalist.

Mr. Allen will be a featured performer at Carthage in 2023, as part of the campus Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration.
