KENOSHA, Wis. — The Rocket League A team in the Carthage esports program took on Buena Vista University for the NECC Championship on Sunday, defeating them by a final score of 4-0 in the Carthage Esports Arena.
"I'm proud of this team and all they've been able to accomplish this season," said director of esports Kevin Palmer. "To cap off an undefeated season with a conference title, all in their first season of competition, is an incredible accomplishment."
The Firebirds entered the match undefeated during their regular season, only dropping a handful of games in Rocket League. Taking on a strong Buena Vista University team, who they defeated 3-1 earlier in the season, Carthage took game one by a score of 7-1 and continued to roll. Falling behind in game four 2-1, the Firebirds bounced back to defeat their opponents 3-2, securing the first conference championship for the program.
"The team was led by Easton Herbon, who was the series MVP," said Palmer. "Easton played his heart out and was all over the map, constantly looking for passes and shots. He led the team in both goals and assists."
With their win today the Firebirds Rocket League team has secured an automatic bid for the national tournament, which will take place in mid-May.
