Profs. Stevenson and Brownholland awarded Higher Education Incentives Grant

Chemistry professors Suzie Stevenson and David Brownholland were recently awarded a Higher Education Incentives grant from the Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium. As part of this grant, two Carthage chemistry students, Makenzie Mullan ’20 and Amy Sorge ’20, will spend the summer at Purdue University working in the lab of organic chemistry professor David Thompson.

While in the Thompson Lab, they will develop new, research-oriented, multi-week flow experiments for the undergraduate organic chemistry curriculum. Flow chemistry is a process, heavily used in space chemistry and pharmaceuticals, whereby chemical reactions occur while traveling through tubing or small chambers etched in glass chips instead of traditional glassware. Experiments will be piloted by Carthage in 2019-20, and will then be adapted for the organic chemistry laboratory courses at Purdue University.
