Public relations course allows students to partner with local businesses
Each year, Carthage students enrolled in the Public Relations Writing course partner with a small, local business to create a PR package for the company.
Through this hands-on experience, students were able to learn how to create a comprehensive marketing plan for a real business. “It was exciting to communicate with their marketing team and practice real-life application under the supervision of a trusted expert,” said Kaitlyn Gilson ’23, public relations minor who partnered with 1 of Us.
Steven Rosenberg, company owner, said that he was impressed by the students’ professionalism. “There was a huge return on time investment, and it ended up being very beneficial for us.”
“Partnering with 1 of Us and learning how to create a PR package for an actual business was an irreplaceable, real-world experience,” said public relations major Nina Werger ’24. “Since the brewery had not yet opened its doors when we worked with them, it felt really special to help 1 of Us launch their company and provide guidance for their communications angle.”
Students currently taking the class are working with BLAK Coffee, and Smarty’s Sweets and Treats — two small Kenosha businesses that are in the early stages of operation.
