Snap-on tool donation benefits Carthage Engineering

Carthage has accepted an in-kind donation of tools and other equipment from Snap-on Inc. for use in the school’s fast-growing engineering program.

These donated items include hand tools, workbenches, and storage cabinets. Already this fall, Carthage students are putting the equipment to use in the Introduction to Engineering Design course.

Headquartered in Kenosha, Snap-on designs and manufactures high-quality tools, diagnostic software, and other solutions for a variety of industries. The S&P 500 company has customers in more than 130 countries.

The expertise of corporate partners have guided faculty and administrators in developing the educational objectives for Carthage’s new engineering program. Snap-on principal engineer Jonathan Andersen serves on the College’s Engineering Advisory Circle.

“Snap-on has been a fantastic partner for us, joining conversations to guide the development of our curriculum, donating tools and equipment, and sponsoring our events,” says Professor Robert Nagel, director of engineering at Carthage. “We are grateful to have Snap-on as our neighbor in Kenosha.”

The Engineering Center at Carthage opened last month in Lentz Hall, featuring design studios, a maker-space, and a learning commons. A second phase of renovations will provide teaching labs and adjacent faculty offices.

About 35 freshmen have declared their intent to study engineering at the College. At the conclusion of their sophomore year, engineering majors will select one of two degree tracks: a Bachelor of Science track that’s aligned with ABET accreditation standards or a Bachelor of Arts track that applies an engineering mindset to the individual student’s targeted field.
