Learn what you need for the 2024-25 FAFSA
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will be open by Dec. 31, 2023, and there are just a few items to get ready before you file.
You or your FAFSA contributors might need:
- 2022 tax returns
- Current balances of cash, savings, and checking accounts
- Net worth of investments, businesses, and farms
- Records of child support received (if applicable)
Who is a contributor for the 2024-2025 FAFSA?
Some of the terminology used in the FAFSA has changed for this year, including the addition of the term “contributor.” Watch this brief video from the U.S. Department of Education outlining who the various contributors might be and what role each of them will serve in filing the FAFSA.
For dependent students:
This year, if in section one of the FAFSA form you’re determined to be a dependent student, you will need to invite your biological or adoptive parents, and/or stepparents to be contributors on your 2024-25 FAFSA form. You will need some information about those individuals in order to invite them, including their:
- Full name
- Date of birth
- Social Security number
- Email sddress
For independent students:
If in section one of the FAFSA form you’re determined to be an independent student, you don’t need to answer questions about your parents to complete your FAFSA form.
