Students are welcome to attend “Exploring Data” with Ben Burch ’06 of Midwest Employers Casualty Berkley on Wednesday, April 3. See the schedule of events below.

Info Session and Lunch

11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m., David A. Straz Jr. Center 199
Register to attend
What does a “data-centered approach” look like in the insurance sector? What interesting problems are out there to be solved using data science? This general-audience talk is for anyone interested in data science, actuarial science, or quantitative methods in insurance and business in general.

Interactive Guest Lecture: Unraveling the Mysteries of Vector Embeddings in Data Science

1:35-2:40 p.m., Niemann Media Theater
(For data science students only)
In this guest lecture, we will explore approaches for using text-based data for data science. As an example, we will use a data set of song lyrics and create various approaches for measuring song similarity. We will start by using a classical natural language processing approach and then introduce a powerful technique called word embeddings. We will start by exploring foundational concepts like word2vec, a groundbreaking technique that maps words to vector representations. These embeddings translate words with similar meanings to clusters in the vector space, capturing important semantic relationships. Expanding upon this foundation, we will build a solution using state-of-the-art embeddings leveraged by Open AI in their latest ChatGPT models. By the end of the lecture, students will gain an. understanding of how vector embeddings facilitate nuanced language understanding and serve as the foundation for solutions to a variety of data science problems.
