More than 50 students attend first Math Department and Math Club event of the year
The Mathematics Department and Carthage Math Club sponsored their first lunch activity of the year on Sept. 10. More than 50 data science and mathematics majors attended this event, in which future plans were announced and pizza was served.
A special highlight was the attendance of Carthage President John Swallow. Many first-year students at Carthage majoring in mathematics were thrilled to learn that President Swallow himself had majored in mathematics in college, studied and earned a doctoral degree in mathematics in graduate school, and had been a mathematics professor at other schools before coming to Carthage.
The next lunch activity will take place Tuesday, Oct. 8, in the Math Lab (DSC 257). At this second event of the year, students will get advice from math faculty and advanced mathematics students about the professional areas they are pursuing with regard to their mathematics major including: actuarial science, data science, secondary school teaching, management science, operations research, consulting, graduate school, and others. More information will be forthcoming about this event.
