Anesce Dremen ’17, majoring in English and Chinese, has been awarded a highly competitive Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) to study Chinese language and culture for eight weeks this summer. The CLS program offers students of select languages, including Japanese, Chinese, Hindi, Russian, and Turkish the opportunity to pursue immersive courses abroad. The grant covers airfare, room and board, courses, activities, and a stipend. This year, the Chinese language institutes take place at sites including Beijing, Xi’an, Suzhou, and Dalian, China.

Anesce is a departmental student fellow in Modern Languages, president of the Chinese Club, and a fellow in the Writing Center. She also works in the campus library. An avid reader and writer, she serves as literary editor of Centrique Magazine, a literary and art print publication at Carthage, and is secretary of Poetry Underground.

Following this summer’s language program, Anesce will remain in China for the 2015-2016 academic year, studying Chinese language and literature in the cities of Beijing and Chengdu.
