Providing electronic access helps students see their overall progress, but more importantly, allows the student to interact with course material outside of class.

In a recent Carthage survey (Miso), eLearning was ranked number one in terms of technology importance by students. However, students would also like to see increased use by faculty so that accessing materials is consistent throughout their courses.

Where are we as a college? Across all classes, 58% have uploaded a syllabus, so we still have a long way to go. The good news is that we beat the national average by 2%!

So what kind of time commitment is needed for this tune up? If you know how to attach a document in email, you can just as easily upload a syllabus or course document to eLearning. If you are unsure of how to use the gradebook, we find that a short 15 minute session usually solves the issue. While there are more advanced items that can be used, such as commenting and returning student work through eLearning, focusing on the availability of your syllabus, course documents, and gradebook is the place to start.

So how do you tune up?

  1. Access help documents and how-to videos at http://libguides.carthage.edu/elearning
  2. Make an appointment with Chris Grugel, or one of the Techfellows including Dan Schowlater, Rom Maczka, JJ Shields, or Mark Mahoney
  3. Attend one of the eLearning workshops that will be offered in the few weeks before the start of the fall semester

As you develop your syllabuses and plan for the fall, take the time to add the basic content to eLearning. Not only will it save a few trees, but it will present a unified approach to our students regarding where and how they will find information for their classes.
