“The biggest surprise I’ve had so far is the number of opportunities I have been given. I never would have expected to get high school coaching experience while still in college. There are so many opportunities that I am so thankful to have gotten.”

Career goal

“I would like to become a physical education teacher at the high school level and coach high school tennis.”

How have Carthage faculty had an impact on your life or Carthage career?

“The Carthage faculty have had a huge impact on my Carthage career. I really wanted a school where I would be able to get to know the faculty. I have learned so much and been influenced in so many ways by many different Carthage faculty members. My relationships with the faculty have allowed me to be where I am today. Any time I have any questions or need help with something like planning for student teaching, I have faculty members that I can go to who will be able to answer all of my questions.”

Favorite class

“My favorite class at Carthage has been my Methods of Physical Education class. That was the class that really allowed me to become fully comfortable teaching students in PE. There have been so many great classes that I have been able to take, but my favorite has to be my PE methods class”

Campus involvement

“I am involved with a few different clubs and teams. I was on the Men’s Tennis Team for two years, I am a part of the Pep Band and Jazz Ensemble here at Carthage, I play in the Handball Choir, I am a member of the Carthage Curling Club, and I play for the Carthage Blitz Ultimate Frisbee Team.”

Toughest class

“My toughest class at Carthage was Anatomy and Physiology. This class was difficult because I took this course while classes were online because of COVID-19, so it was difficult to get the most out of that class. It was hard to do labs at home when usually we would do them in groups in person.”

Internships or on-campus employment

“I have had the opportunity to do a few different jobs. The first is being a Tutor in the Carthage Tutoring Center for EXS 3010 and EXS 2330 (both of which are statistics classes that are in the EXS course code). I have been able to be a tutor for my peers which has been very beneficial in giving me practice for my future career goal of teaching.

“Another job I was able to get was an Assistant Varsity boys tennis coaching position at Union Grove High School. I was able to help coach that team throughout a season and am hoping to coach them again next season.”

Opportunities at Carthage

“The best opportunity that I have had here at Carthage was going to Japan with the Wind Orchestra. That was an amazing opportunity as I was able to play music in another country, and I got to meet elementary, high school, and college students from Japan while we were there”

“I received a few Carthage scholarships including an instrumental scholarship from the Music Department, the Hazel Bothe scholarship from the Music Department, and the EXSS Department Scholarship for the 2021-2022 school year. It is amazing to be able to receive scholarships from the school and the various departments, it really has helped me succeed here at Carthage.”

Favorite moments and memories at Carthage

“Some of my favorite memories have come from band, frisbee, and my EXSS classes. I have made some of the best memories with the Carthage Wind Orchestra both in Japan during J-Term and just making music with them for various concerts. The Ultimate Frisbee team has created a space where I can be an athlete and make a ton of lifelong friends. Finally, some of my classmates and the classes we were in together have created some great memories that I will remember long after graduation.”

Favorite spot on campus

“My favorite spot on campus is the open area behind the Tower. When it is warmer outside, I am out there every single day at 9 p.m. playing frisbee with the frisbee team. In addition, playing sand volleyball or just sitting out there enjoying the weather is a great time.”

Biggest surprise so far

“The biggest surprise I’ve had so far is the number of opportunities I have been given. I never would have expected to be able to go to Japan. I would never have expected to get high school coaching experience while still in college. There are so many opportunities that I am so thankful to have gotten.”

What would your 8-year-old self think of you now?

“My 8-year-old self would be really happy with where I am today. I believe that some part of me back then knew I was going to end up as some sort of teacher, and here I am, ready to student teach and then go off and make a difference in the world.”

Why should other students consider your major? What advice do you have for them?

“Students should consider becoming an EXSS major if they are interested in doing anything sports-related. PE and health teachers, personal trainers, physical therapists, all types of coaches, and even students interested in sports management all have a place in the EXSS department.”

Why Carthage?

“I chose Carthage because of the location. Being right on the lake is wonderful. In addition, it is a good distance from my hometown. I was looking for a small school that emphasized student-professor interaction, and I wanted a school where I was really going to get to know the people I am in class with, all of which Carthage has given me.”
