When Allen Wyma was young, he used to help his father build computers from scratch. Now he’s starting his senior year at Carthage; he’ll graduate this spring with a degree in Chinese and computer science.

His goal is to become a senior software engineer for a cellular phone manufacturer. He added a Chinese major to become a better candidate should he seek a job in computers and national defense.

“At Carthage, I was fortunate to go on a J-Term class to China, which changed my initial Chinese minor into a major,” Allen said. “I was also fortunate to go to a career event at Epic Healthcare Systems, which looks like an environment that I would like to work in.”

“My favorite spot on campus is probably the library because of how nice everything is and the fact that it has the individual study rooms where you can go to study or do work quietly.”

How have Carthage faculty had an impact on your life or Carthage career?

Mark Mahoney. “He is a very easy-going guy who is always willing to help. He brings a lot of expertise from his years working at Motorola. He also never stops learning new techniques or programming languages, which is great because if we try anything new, he’s usually already played with it and gives us an insight.”

Favorite class

Software Design and Development. “It is as close to the real-world as you can possibly be, where you start from the beginning of a software application from planning all the way up through building the project and testing it.”

Toughest class

Computer Organization. “I took the class without taking the prerequisite, which was not so bad, but the class definitely made you think in a totally different direction than what you are used to. Before, all of the classes were all programming, where you can easily make edits. This class was building logic circuits, which involved a lot more thinking and planning before execution.”

Favorite moments and memories at Carthage

“A lot of my favorite moments on campus have been with the students I go to computer science class with. We have a lab that we can go to do our work, and you can always find at least two guys in there. We always have fun doing our work together or just hanging out.”

Favorite spot on campus

“My favorite spot on campus is probably the library because of how nice everything is and the fact that it has the individual study rooms where you can go to study or do work quietly.”

Biggest surprise so far

“The biggest surprise so far has been all of the different projects and accomplishments that we have achieved from the computer science classes at Carthage. I’ve compared with my friends at other schools to what they are doing in the same classes that I have taken, and they do not even come close to the things that we do.”
