Sergio Flores Jr.
Biography
Sergio Flores Jr. is originally from the northwest Chicago suburbs of Illinois and has lived in small towns for the past six years in both Illinois and Missouri. He completed his undergraduate work at Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois, and obtained his graduate degree from the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Missouri. He was the first in his family to go to college and get his degree.
During Sergio’s time as an undergraduate, he got his first taste of student affairs while worked for housing as a resident assistant for three years. He focused on studying students with intersecting identities as well as how college students develop based on the identities that they hold. At one point, he was a part of all three housing organizations on campus, which included the Inter-Hall Council, the Resident Assistant Council, and the National Residence Hall Honorary.
Sergio graduated from Western Illinois University in 2018 and began his graduate work as a residence hall director. There, he worked in small and large communities as well as supervised and advised students. In 2019, he took a summer internship at the University of Missouri-Kansas City in their LGBTQIA+ office which furthered his education and ideas of what student affairs could do. He credits this experience with pushing him to continue educating himself on how to help students who are under-represented and who have intersecting identities.
Being hired as Carthage’s area coordinator is Sergio’s first post-graduate position, and he could not be happier with the team and students that he is working with.
