Give three words that sum up your internship experience.
Educational, Beneficial, Lenient
How did you learn about your internship?
“I learned about my internship through the Carthage Career Fair. I met a recruiter there and was emailed the following week for an interview.”
Describe your internship.
“I was in charge of maintaining and updating a web application that is used to virtually create heater and cooler units. This involved programming as well as social skills in order to interact with other departments to get updates finished efficiently. I also did some SAP testing as Modine was implementing the software to their sales group and briefly dabbled in technical writing.”
What do you enjoy most about your internship? What are some of the challenges?
“I enjoyed being able to work in a fairly laid back environment. Although there were deadlines to meet, the people that I worked with were always nice and helpful whenever I was confused. The biggest challenges were learning how to program in a new language and trying to learn many engineering and HVAC terms that I had never heard before.”
How does your internship fit with your long-term career goals?
“It gave me rare field experience early on in my collegiate career and helped shape what career I would like in the future.”
During your internship search, how did you make yourself stand out to employers?
“I worked hard in the Career Services office. I redid my resume numerous times and worked on my interviewing skills. I also made sure to always dress to impress, specifically at the career fair. This is all a part of networking and making yourself appealing to employers.”
What did you find to be the most helpful during your internship search process?
“The career fair was an awesome experience that allowed for me to talk face to face with employers. It is an experience that simply cannot be matched by blindly applying online for internships.”
Do you have any tips to share with other students about your experience?
“Do not be afraid to ask questions! Throughout an internship search and an internship experience questions are very important. They can help determine whether an internship is a good fit and they can help improve an internship experience when an intern is unsure. Interns are there to learn and most employers understand that and want to help answer questions to the best of their ability.”
