Give three words that sum up your internship experience.
Difficult, Exciting, Developmental
How did you learn about your internship?
“I first heard of an internship with Wyndham Worldwide from my faculty advisor, Cathy Duffy, who put me in contact with a recruiter. I originally did not get the position my first try, but secured the position on my second attempt, with the help of Carolynn Friesch in the Career Services office.”
Describe your internship.
“It is very individualized. I am placed in two different locations where I am promoting Wyndham Grand Chicago Riverfront’s vacation suites and creating entertainment itineraries for tourists. In the hotel location, I work on building relationships with guests to find attractions best suited for their travel goals.”
What do you enjoy most about your internship? What are some of the challenges?
“The part I enjoy the most about Wyndham is the cohesive group we have on staff. Everyone is very welcoming and willing to give advice to help succeed on the job. The biggest challenge is reaching the marketing team goals which make it somewhat stressful when you have slow days on the job; it is important to keep a positive attitude and speak to potentials with confidence.”
How does your internship fit with your long-term career goals?
“It is a perfect fit because it is giving me quality field experience to work with mature adults and establishing rapport with people from different cultures and backgrounds. I am finding ways to make connections with people and successfully building a strong first impression.”
During your internship search, how did you make yourself stand out to employers?
“I exuded confidence in all of my interviews and made the recruiter feel comfortable with my skills and qualities. I knew my resume top to bottom and elaborated on all of my experiences and how it translated to the desired job. My first impression was the building block to becoming a part of Wyndham Worldwide.”
What did you find to be the most helpful during your internship search process?
“The internet. There is a plethora of websites that provide good information on companies to impress your recruiter. In terms of finding what you want to do, I started with what I wanted to accomplish and what kind of environment I wanted to be a part of; internet searching helps tremendously.”
Do you have any tips to share with other students about your experience?
“Have an agenda. See your pathway and plan ways to achieve your goals. If you don’t know where you want to go, how will you ever know when you’ve found it?”
