Give three words that sum up your internship experience.
Amazing, Educational, Insightful
How did you learn about your internship?
“Carolynn Friesch, the Director of Employer Relations at Carthage, asked if they would like an intern for costumes and then sent me the application. So I have Carolynn to thank for one of the best things I have done as an undergrad.”
Describe your internship.
“At Hubbard Street, the fall is when they build the costumes for the rest of the season, so my role is to help build many different dances as well as keep up to date with the administrative side as well, so I also do paperwork….”
What do you enjoy most about your internship? What are some of the challenges?
“I really love working around professionals in the field I want to go into. I also love that there is so much that I am learning, even if it feels like I’m doing something silly, I later see the value of it. I would say some of the challenges I have faced is working 40 hours a week at my internship, commuting, and taking two classes. It’s hard to want to do school work when you just put in eight hours, but I still manage.”
How does your internship fit with your long-term career goals?
“I’m hoping that my internship will help open doors for me to find a job in the future. Theatre and dance are both such small communities that my boss knows a lot of people and has worked a lot of places in Chicago. She has also promised to introduce me to many of the people she knows in the community.”
During your internship search, how did you make yourself stand out to employers?
“For my field, it is important to show examples of your work. So created a website so that employers could go and look at my entire portfolio and see what is it I can do. I think that really helped me in the process.”
What did you find to be the most helpful during your internship search process?
“I would say that the most helpful thing during the process was Carolynn. She helped me learn about what a technical theatre resume should look like. She showed me what a cover letter was and she also sent me internships to apply to.”
