“Every faculty member I’ve worked with has given me valuable advice relating to both academics and my future. The breadth of knowledge and experience I gained at Carthage is almost entirely thanks to enthusiastic and helpful faculty. 

“Professor Perry Kivolowitz was the first professor I had within the computer science major and has always been an extremely supportive force in my studies. His teachings and passion for the department were some of the leading factors in my decision to pursue a degree in computer science.

Professor Rick Bingen taught me, and so many other students, about game development. I cannot express how thankful I am that Carthage has classes about this subject and that we have a professor who shares my passion for this field. Prof. Bingen helped me realize that my passion for video games and coding doesn’t have to be separate, and that I can look forward to a future career in which I am doing something I love.”

“I took a Computer Science Topics class over J-Term with Prof. Bingen. In it, we took an in-depth look at procedural generation in video games. This was one of my favorite classes because it combined my passion for game development and an academic analysis of the applications of algorithms in computer generation. I was able to learn how I can apply my coding skills to make visible changes in an environment, and I was able to make a unique final project that highlighted both my coding and game design skills.”

“In my four years at Carthage, I have been involved in a variety of extracurricular activities. I have held multiple officer positions in Phi Kappa Sigma, and I am also a member of the Carthage esports team, in which I play Overwatch.”

“My toughest class was Operating Systems. It took a deeper dive into computer operations than I was previously used to; however, I learned a lot and gained a better understanding of the systems and tools I use today.”

“My freshman year, I took a J-Term study tour to Germany and Austria. This was an incredible experience, and I had the opportunity to travel with the Carthage Philharmonic. Traveling abroad is an amazing opportunity that Carthage offers, and I encourage all students to take advantage of it if they can.”

“The academic scholarship awarded by Carthage was the most influential financial support I received. Having affordable education is incredibly important. The scholarship removed a substantial amount of financial worry I previously had about college.”

“Homecoming and the Christmas Festival have always been some of my favorite Carthage events. Participating in something with alumni, faculty, family, and current students is a fun experience.”

“My favorite spot on campus is the Esports Arena. Along with getting most of my homework done there, I also have Overwatch practice and a game development class in the space. It is perfect for hanging out with my friends and getting work done.”

“The biggest surprise was the amount of self change I experienced in college. I have grown significantly as not just a student, but as a person. I discovered my true passions and values, and I have become the kind of person I know can do amazing things after college.”

“There is a lot of reward in learning material that can be applied in practical ways. Computer science is becoming increasingly useful, and finding interesting ways to apply it, both in and out of class projects, is a lot of fun. There is a variety of topics you can study that lets you choose your own path. You can be successful in this major by polishing your individual skills and working with professors to hone your craft. The best advice I can give is something that gets taught to every student in the major — start early and work steadily.”

“Carthage had exactly what I needed from a four-year school. It is relatively close to home and has a lot student success and advising resources. It is a smaller school with a close-knit community.
