Give three words that sum up your internship experience.
Independent, Enjoyable, Knowledgeable
How did you learn about your internship?
“I learned about my internship through Career Services!”
Describe your internship.
“My internship is a little different! I worked in two different departments within my internship. The first month at my internship I was working on marketing for E.C. Styberg. I was looking at both of their websites and giving my honest critique about what I would keep and change for both websites and helping them come up with different ideas on how to market their company better and efficiently. I was then transferred over to doing human resources. With HR I am completely re-writing job descriptions for different areas for jobs in the warehouse. I am starting from scratch with writing job descriptions which is fun but challenging!”
What do you enjoy most about your internship? What are some of the challenges?
“I really enjoy that they give me the freedom to work on my own and really have a lot of control of the things that I’m doing. It just really showed me they have a lot of trust in me. Some challenges are that I don’t know a lot of the engineering terms or the names of some of the metal parts they make or what some of them do. It sure has been a learning experience. I’ve learned more about engineering than I thought I ever would!”
How does your internship fit with your long-term career goals?
“Yes, it does because I realized that I really want to do something within human resources. I really want to feel like I am making a difference in people’s lives and it has also helped me gain more experience on top of the experience that I’ve had with human resources.”
During your internship search, how did you make yourself stand out to employers?
“I feel like one way I helped make myself stand out was holding many leadership positions during my college career. I feel that really shows my leadership ability and I am able to do what I set my mind to.”
What did you find to be the most helpful during your internship search process?
“During my internship search I found that Carolynn Friesch to be the most helpful because she really wanted me to find an internship that I would enjoy, and something that I would enjoy doing for the rest of the semester.”
Do you have any tips to share with other students about your experience?
“Take an internship at a company that is outside of your own realm because you will gain a lot of knowledge in that line of work. You honestly learn something completely new that is very interesting. You will learn something and learn more about the subject than you ever thought you would know before. Get to know your co-workers, because you will be surprised when they ask for your opinion on something! Don’t be scared to ask questions, even if it is clarification on something just to make sure you understood it. Ask anyway.”
