Matthew Wehmeier ’15 is studying toward a master’s degree in history. He’s enrolled in the Master of Arts Program for the Social Sciences at the University of Chicago.
Mr. Wehmeier attended Carthage on a Modern Languages Scholarship. While here, he earned a DAAD scholarship in spring 2014 and a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Germany in 2015-16.
How did Carthage prepare you?
“My experience as a German major allowed me to live abroad not once, but twice; first in Berlin for a semester as a student, and then in Jena, Thuringia, as an English teaching assistant through the Fulbright Program. I use my language skills on a near-daily basis studying at the University of Chicago, and I would not be able to complete my master’s thesis without the skills I learned at Carthage.”
How has your liberal arts education benefitted you?
“My German language skills were indispensable on a daily basis when I went to teach in Jena, and I was able to use them to make connections with other young people in the area.”
