Andrew Rosenberg came to Carthage because he knew he would be able to participate in a variety of activities, something that wouldn’t be possible at bigger schools. “Carthage allows you to follow your interests no matter how varied they may be,” he said. And Andrew has done just that. He plays on the football team, debates in Model United Nations, works on campus, and still has time to meet with professors or hangout with friends.
Andrew is a political science major on the pre-law track. The idea of becoming a lawyer has always been very exciting to him. “A career as an attorney gives you unparalleled access and familiarity with important institutions in our society such as the government, business, or controversial court cases.”
Career goal
“I would like to be an in-house legal adviser for a large, global corporation.”
How have Carthage faculty had an impact on your life or Carthage career?
“There are a lot of Carthage professors that I could call my favorite, however I would say that the most unique is Prof. Kirkland. He fits the quirky college professor stereotype perfectly, and his classes are exceptionally interesting.”
Favorite class
“My favorite class would have to be American Political Theory. It made me realize a lot about our country that cannot be gained from a simple history class. An example of something we studied would be the complex and intriguing arguments from both sides of the American Civil War. The settings and people from the past become so much more real and meaningful when you can understand the way they thought through their words.”
Campus involvement
“I’ve been on the varsity football team for four years, pep band for three years, and Carthage Model United Nations for two years. I also participated in Character Quest, which is a year long Carthage-sponsored leadership program.”
Toughest class
“My toughest class was Contemporary Political Theory because of how complex the arguments of the authors we studied were.”
Internships or on-campus employment
“I have an ongoing internship with Prof. Michael Phegley, who is also the Municipal Judge in Mount Pleasant, Wis. During Municipal Court dates, I assist him with processing tickets and fines for offenders as they called up to the stand.”
Opportunities at Carthage
“Carthage has provided me with tons of opportunities. I’ve been able to intern at a live court, present market research to a large corporation in Racine, and meet important people from around the country through my job in the Office of Institutional Advancement.”
Favorite moments and memories at Carthage
“My favorite moment at Carthage would have to be homecoming because campus is extra busy, and everyone is out having a good time.”
Favorite spot on campus
“The best spot on campus would have to be the Clausen Center due to Starbucks coffee and the newest classrooms both being present there.”
Biggest surprise so far
“The biggest surprise so far has been the amount of time that professors take outside the classroom to make sure you understand the material well.”
What would your 8-year-old self think of you now?
“My 8-year-old self would probably think my current studies are boring. I wanted to work with animals when I was younger and was dead set on being a veterinarian.”
Why should other students consider your major? What advice do you have for them?
“Be proactive in setting up your career after Carthage. You need to be actively looking for internships and other applicable opportunities because political science is not exactly a big ‘in demand’ major. However, it does teach you excellent and useful skills that can be applied to a wide range of employment possibilities such as business, government, law, and academia. Political Science is also especially useful at preparing someone for Law School. The analytic reading, debate, and writing skills are directly transferable to a legal career.”
