Give three words that sum up your internship experience.
Exciting, Fulfilling, Exhausting
How did you learn about your internship?
“I learned about the position from my adviser and from multiple students who had participated in their own internship positions at the zoo.”
Describe your internship.
- Dietary Preparation
- Daily Cleaning of Animal Exhibits and Habitats
- Dishes and Laundry
- Animal Enrichment Preparation
- Building Enrichment Toys and Items
- Tending the Petting Zoo
What do you enjoy most about your internship? What are some of the challenges?
“The internship is designed in a way that allows the intern to gain exposure to the daily routines of zookeepers for all animals at the zoo by rotating through six different routines. It’s really interesting to see how similar and how different each routine can be. Every day is different and promises new challenges and experiences. The work is also very physical, and I like that it not only stimulates me mentally, but also keeps me physically fit while spending much of my day outside.”
How does your internship fit with your long-term career goals?
“My heart lies in the conservation of wildlife and wilderness. The zoo is much the same in that it seeks to educate the public about the importance and value of conservation. I plan to seek a Ph.D in Conservation Biology or Environmental Engineering in order to have the skills I need to help tackle the challenges that humanity faces with environmental issues.”
During your internship search, how did you make yourself stand out to employers?
“I’ve known that I wanted to participate in this specific internship for a long time. I tailored my resume to the types of qualities they were looking for by highlighting skills that I have and activities I had participated in that they would find desirable in an intern.”
What did you find to be the most helpful during your internship search process?
“The Career Services office was my most valuable resource. They helped me to create a stellar resume that I feel went a long way in distinguishing me from the crowd. I also found the recommendations and advice from other students who had participated in internships at the zoo invaluable. I would not have taken the steps to go after the internship without the advice and encouragement I received from my peers.”
Do you have any tips to share with other students about your experience?
“Participating in this internship has been an awesome and eye-opening experience! Don’t underestimate the value of a real-world experience applicable to your field while you are still a student. Find something that you want to do and go after it! Utilize all the resources available to you, from your advisers and the career center to your peers. People genuinely want to see your success!”
