Alan Mills ’79 is a Partner at Barnes & Thornburg. Currently, he is the chair of the Special Servicer Team. Mr. Mills earned his J.D. at Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law; graduating with summa cum laude. His extensive law career includes serving as former President of the Marion County Bar Association and former chairperson of the Indiana State Election Board. Now, he is a Board Member of the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law Board of Visitors.
What have you enjoyed most about your career?
“I have enjoyed the complicated work and freedom this career has provided me in terms of being active in the community.”
How has your liberal arts education benefitted you?
“Certainly, critical thinking and problem solving are an important part of the law practice. However, the people skills that I learned at Carthage have been the most important. Understanding people and not being judgmental are important parts of the law practice.”
What's your favorite Carthage memory?
“The late night conversations with groups of African American students.”
Tips for current Carthage students?
“Never give up. Never let other people define you or your value. Make a commitment to creating a fair, just and diverse society.”
