Give three words that sum up your internship experience.
Engaging, Motivating, Educational
How did you learn about your internship?
“As I was searching for a summer internship, I wanted more experience in the healthcare field. Laurie Jensen, the clinical coordinator for the Athletic Training Program, has provided me with numerous opportunities to shadow both physicians and physician assistants throughout the past two years. Knowing my dream of becoming a physician assistant, Laurie introduced me to her daughter Jill. Jill is an orthopedic physician assistant at the Mayo Clinic in Red Wing, Minn., who I have spent the summer learning from.”
Describe your internship.
“Throughout the summer I have not only spent time shadowing in orthopedics, but I have also explored the operating room and the general surgery room. I have been given the opportunity to talk with patients and perform orthopedic examinations under the supervision of a certified physician assistant. I have helped assist with cortisone injections, casting, and post operative care.”
What do you enjoy most about your internship? What are some of the challenges?
“The things I have enjoyed most about my time shadowing a physician assistant is gaining direct experience from a physician. Having the opportunity to learn about the daily responsibilities of a PA has shown me that I truly am heading in the right direction for my career. As a student studying healthcare it is challenging, because you are limited on the hands on experience you can receive in a hospital setting.”
How does your internship fit with your long-term career goals?
“This experience has shown me the roles and responsibilities of a Physician Assistant and has motivated me to continue my education. As an undergraduate student, I wish to attend graduate school to become a physician assistant.”
During your internship search, how did you make yourself stand out to employers?
“I made myself stand out by improving my resume and working hard to show my professors some of the skill sets I have as an undergraduate student.”
What did you find to be the most helpful during your internship search process?
“The most helpful tool to me during my internship search process was personal connections. Being in the Athletic Training Program at Carthage, I have made connections with the professors and staff that have pushed me to pursue my education. I have found that the connections a student can make during their college years are highly important in the future.”
Do you have any tips to share with other students about your experience?
“My advice to other students is to shadow someone in the field you wish to pursue. It is good to see the daily roles in each career before jumping into it. For me, this internship showed me I was heading in the right direction to become a PA.”
