Give three words that sum up your internship experience.
Immersive, Incredible, Defining
How did you learn about your internship?
“I found out about it from a former Blackrock intern, who had posted the application link on a facebook group.”
Describe your internship.
“I am responsible for developing a web application that will be used to intuitively display information about Blackrock assets.I also worked on its integration as a plugin into the central platform, Aladdin; it handles risk analytics, comprehensive portfolio management, trading and operations.”
What do you enjoy most about your internship? What are some of the challenges?
“I enjoyed every moment working with my team. Blackrock is structured in a way in which specific groups develop different tools for different security management purposes. My manager and co-workers were very supportive and refreshing people to be around everyday. I was also impressed by the asynchronous integration of groups that were involved to ensure our summer experience was not only holistic but educative. Primary challenge was developing in a new language with new frameworks that were still in development phase.Angular 2 is still in beta stage and therefore there is a limited amount of resources that have addressed a few bugs that may arise or different ways of doing things.”
How does your internship fit with your long-term career goals?
“It has exposed me to front-end development in a production environment, which is a different experience from classroom-graded assignments. Delivery is key. It has also shed light on what area of software development I might be interested in.”
During your internship search, how did you make yourself stand out to employers?
“At the beginning of the internship, we set summer internship goals and sectioned tasks in two sprints. I also had 15 minutes daily meetings to update my manager on my progress on the web-app and asked questions occasionally.”
What did you find to be the most helpful during your internship search process?
“Velocity is a great asset especially, the sessions where they address resume highlights. I also found that applying directly on the company’s career’s website that you interested in rather than a job search site increases the chances of at least getting a response.”
Do you have any tips to share with other students about your experience?
“Dream big. You want to apply to google? Apple? Blackstone? Palantir? Rust Oleum? Go for it. What’s stopping you? It’s all about your presentation and your skill set. The sky should not be the limit anyway.”
