Matthew Richer ’14 is a trial attorney that specializes in insurance defense, personal injury, and business litigation. Though he started off as a history major, Professor Powers’ Constitutional Law class sparked his interest in the legal field which resulted in him going to and graduating from law school. Being able to help people motivates him to work longer hours and get the results his clients need/deserve.

“I’ve enjoyed opportunity to help others on their worst days.”

How did Carthage prepare you?

“Always wanting to learn more and never being satisfied with your results.”

How has your liberal arts education benefitted you?

“Many times in the course of litigation you get stuck with an answer or a fact. It is easy to move on and just accept a fault or even ending of a case, but through critical thinking and some confidence, you often find ways around or through seem problems you first thought were detrimental.”

What's your favorite Carthage memory?

“Some of my favorite Carthage memories were at the library. There I made connections from my homework or outside reading that really inspired me. I had so many ‘aha moments’ in the basement of the library that the building will always bring back solid memories.”

Tips for current Carthage students?

“When at Carthage have a vague plan. Do not make it too specific because if you do you will limit the options/interests you may never know you had. I went into Carthage thinking I knew exactly what job I wanted post-graduation; however, by keeping an open mind I found a new passion.”

Are you a Carthage graduate who is excelling in your field?
