Eleni Kaitson graduated from Carthage in 2018 with a degree in social work. She is now a social work intern at Oakwood Junior High and High School, and is a graduate student at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

While at Carthage, Ms. Kaitson was vice president of the social work committee and graduated cum laude. She is grateful for the support she received from the faculty, especially Professor Rebecca Hornung

“[Prof.] Hornung played a significant part in my success. Her lessons and projects were always challenging and helped me grow as a student. She always pushed me to try my hardest and always believed in me. She is a phenomenal professor and human being.”

Even though she’s left Carthage, Ms. Kaitson says she uses Carthage’s mission, “Seeking Truth, Building Strength, and Inspiring Service — Together,” every day.

“Carthage College helped me to become a confident individual. I always had professors and friends that believed in me.”

What have you enjoyed most about your career?

“I like seeing positive growth in students. It is really rewarding to know I have a direct impact on the clients I work with.”

How did Carthage prepare you?

“Definitely the social work coursework and fieldwork. Having a challenging course load as well as experience working in the field prepared me for grad school and being an intern.”

How has your liberal arts education benefitted you?

“My senior year field placement helped me gain several skills such as critical thinking, effectively communicating with my clients, and I also learned the importance of ‘being teachable.’ It is so important to always have an open mind and ready to try new techniques and concepts for whatever field you are in.”
