“Both student teaching and studying abroad for a semester in Spain helped prepare me for my career immensely. I am a hands-on learner, so I am grateful that Carthage provides many of these opportunities.”
Amy Goldsmith ’19 believes that all students should take advantage of the opportunities at Carthage, such as internships, research programs, teaching opportunities, and oversea trips because they gave her unique hands-on experience. Ms. Goldsmith uses the skills she gained from Carthage programs at her current job as a Spanish teacher at Bradford High School in Kenosha.
What have you enjoyed most about your career?
“There is never a dull moment, and the kids are constantly making me laugh. What is most rewarding is seeing how the students become their own individuals, each of them forming their own opinions and pursuing their unique passions. While other careers may take years to see a payoff, teaching provides the opportunity to celebrate successes constantly.”
How did Carthage prepare you?
“Both student teaching and studying abroad for a semester in Spain helped prepare me for my career immensely. I am a hands-on learner, so I am grateful that Carthage provides many of these opportunities.”
How has your liberal arts education benefitted you?
“Writing and presenting my thesis is something I will always remember. Spending an entire semester dedicated to a single topic taught me how to take complete ownership over my learning. It was fun getting to use my liberal arts skills to explore my major in a unique direction that was completely my own.”
What's your favorite Carthage memory?
“My favorite Carthage memories include spending time with the people I met. Being at a small school is incredible because you form connections with people from all majors, sports, and activities. It is hard to say specifically how Carthage shaped me. I just know that I graduated feeling the best, most independent version of myself. I think most people can attest to the fact that Carthage has its own very special identity, and I will feel connected to the experience for the rest of my life.”
Tips for current Carthage students?
“If I were to give students one piece of advice, it would be to take risks. The best opportunities are often out of your comfort zone. The best experiences I had at Carthage were all things I initially felt nervous about. Whether it is a J-Term trip, study abroad, an internship, or an opportunity for research, do something that pushes your limits.”
