Monica LaFaive ’17, a Presidential Dahl Scholarship recipient, says that Carthage faculty members thoroughly supported her and pushed her to do her best. She believes her IPE advisor, Professor Art Cyr, played a vital role in her success at college and helped guide her in her career path.
“Prof. Cyr took the time to get to know me as a person. He used my personal interests and related them to my IPE major. I was also a Spanish major, and he helped me explore IPE topics in Spanish-speaking countries.”
Ms. LaFaive currently works as a commercial underwriter for Jewelers Mutual, reviewing new business submissions, renewal applications, and other policy changes and requests.
How did Carthage prepare you?
“The variety of classes I took at Carthage really helped me be more versatile and agile in my current position. I took courses in both the arts and the sciences, and just about everything in between. The small class sizes also helped me excel. I worked one-on-one with professors and was able to ask them questions whenever I needed. I always had access to their expertise, and I never felt like a number in a class.”
Tips for current Carthage students?
“Take this time to explore your interests. If you enjoy both computer science and theatre, take classes in both. Take as many classes as you can. Now is the time to learn more about yourself and discover your passions.”
