Megan Miles ’21 graduated from Carthage with a number of awards and honors. She was the recipient of the Japanese Scholarship, named to the Dean’s List, honored as a Carthage Honors Scholar, and earned departmental honors in the international political economy program.

Today, Ms. Miles works as a sales coordinator at Nippon Steel Trading Americas, Inc., where she coordinates the sales of the specialty steel division’s biggest client in the United States by receiving imported materials from Japan, navigating tariff laws and CBP procedures, and releasing the material to the client.

Ms. Miles believes that both of her majors helped prepare her for her current career.

What have you enjoyed most about your career?

“I enjoy being the face of a changing generation of young American professionals in a Japanese-dominated company.”

How did Carthage prepare you?

“My Japanese classes prepared me for the listening and reading comprehension that comes with working with both expatriates and local Japanese hires. Learning about the global supply chain has helped me understand the nuances of my work. Furthermore, the intertwining of politics and the economy is present in aspects of tariffs and pricing.”

Why did you choose Carthage?

“I chose Carthage because I wanted to have a more personal relationship with my professors.”

What Carthage professors played a part in your success and how?

“Professors Yan Wang and Art Cyr were vital in bolstering my confidence to develop into the leader I am today. I cannot thank them enough.”

What's your favorite Carthage memory?

“The times spent going to Starbucks between classes with my friends are unmatched.”
