Give three words that sum up your internship experience.
Exploring, Experimenting, Discovering
How did you learn about your internship?
“I was informed through Career Services.”
Describe your internship.
“I performed a variety of tests on dewatering systems using decanter centrifuges. I also studied the formation of bubbles within these systems, and experimented with solutions for this problem.”
What do you enjoy most about your internship? What are some of the challenges?
“I found the novelty of my work refreshing. There were few days I found myself looking at the same problem, or reviewing the same information. That kind of exploration kept me thinking about my work, even after I took off my lab coat for the day.”
How does your internship fit with your long-term career goals?
“The practice and skills I developed working in the lab are the bedrock of a scientific foundation. I learned through practice all the concepts of the Scientific Method I had only memorized in the past. These skills make me an asset to companies in almost any field.”
During your internship search, how did you make yourself stand out to employers?
“My previous experience in physics drove my search for a position in natural science, and Centrisys utilized this knowledge immediately. I had to draw on what I already knew to help them design experiments and solve problems.”
What did you find to be the most helpful during your internship search process?
“I found the regular updates from Ms. Messenger and Ms. Friesch very helpful. They kept me thinking about the process, and what I found find satisfying as a career.”
Do you have any tips to share with other students about your experience?
“I would recommend that students determine what they are interested in, but not let this determination keep them from trying something new, or unrelated. Even the semester before I started my internship, I couldn’t have imagined myself in this position. However, the work I have done with Centrisys has opened new doors for me, and provided valuable experiences.”
