“I hope to become a book editor for writers so they can share their ideas and stories with the world. However, freelancing may not be the wisest choice right after college, so I will search for writing jobs on marketing or news teams. Due to my current position as a writer on the Fine Arts marketing team, I will graduate with two years of experience.”

“The faculty members in the English Department have been a huge help every step of my Carthage career. They want nothing more than to help each and every English major succeed. If not for the support of the faculty, I would not have the opportunities, thesis, or job occupation that I have now.”

“My favorite class was Human Communication with Professor DeAnna Fabiano. Each class was both fun and educational — helping me understand identity, communication, verbal/nonverbal language, and culture while also creating connections with my classmates. I plan on taking Public Speaking in the fall to help fully refine my communication and verbal skills.”

“I am the secretary (soon to be vice president if the election goes well) of Firebird Gaming, Carthage’s gaming club. College isn’t just about studying and partying. I use my position to remind students that school can be so much more and that it isn’t difficult to find others who have the same hobbies as you. I also help plan gaming events/tournaments, fundraising events, meetings, and announcements.”

“My toughest class at Carthage was Junior Seminar. The course prepares us for advanced literature studies and our senior thesis. Anything to do with your thesis is (unsurprisingly) difficult; however, I am thankful for this opportunity to further define my ideas before I present my thesis in the fall.”

“I am currently a writer on Carthage’s Fine Arts marketing team. I write press releases, blog posts, and Bridge posts, as well as contact directors and interview potential blog post candidates. This opportunity has helped me combine a company’s “voice” with my own writing and create an article that motivates my readers.”

“I was invited to become a member of Sigma Tau Delta (English Honor Society). I was recommended due to my hard work and love for literature and creative writing. I am currently the Carthage branch treasurer, helping the board with financial decisions and event planning.”

“My favorite memories include attending events with my friends. Whether it be hanging out with them during bingo, movie nights, or shows, my experiences with them are something that I’ll never forget.”

“My favorite spot is behind The Tower. If I manage to wake myself up early (which isn’t likely), I like to go there to study and watch the sun rise on the red adirondack chairs. The lighting isn’t terrific, but the experience is worth it.”

“As a homeschooler starting college, there was always that small voice in the back of my head wondering ‘am I truly ready for this?’ I realize now that there was nothing to worry about! I’m surprised to say that all of my classes have gone well, my GPA is higher than I anticipated, and I have been on the Dean’s List for two semesters.”

“I think my 8-year-old self would be proud of all I have accomplished. He would also thank me for somehow finding a major that allows me to read books for a living!”

“If you’re an admirer of books or writing, I highly recommend being an English major! Being able to analyze literature and use your teachings in everyday life is an amazing experience. Don’t let anyone tell you that English is a useless degree. Whether it be teaching, journalism, marketing, editing, writing, or publishing, there are so many ways you can use your degree after you graduate.”

“Gorgeous lake view aside, I loved the small classes. Having a small class means that each and every student has the opportunity for hands-on learning — something that you may not receive in a class of 50 people.”
