Grant Gosizk graduated from Carthage in 2012 with degrees in English and creative writing. He says he owes his success to Professors Maria Carrig and Rick Meier for supporting his work and sharing his enthusiasm for literary study. Mr. Gosizk says that their attitudes toward practice and collaboration, and intention have influenced how he carries himself in his professional life.

After Carthage, Mr. Gosizk traveled to the United Kingdom to study at the University of Kent in Canterbury, England, and earned his doctorate.

Mr. Gosizk works as an associate lecturer at the University of Wisconsin Parkside, and an adjunct faculty member at Carthage and the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. He teaches in each of the colleges’ respective humanities programs.

“All of our paths are circuitous. Don’t judge yourself according to anyone else’s metric.”

What have you enjoyed most about your career?

“I feel very fortunate to make a living by reading, writing, thinking, and sharing my thoughts. The nature of this work makes my worst day at least somewhat enjoyable. I most enjoy working with collegiate colleagues that encourage and facilitate my research. I work with many kind people that offer insight and encouragement into my writing. I wouldn’t be able to get anything done without them.”

How did Carthage prepare you?

“I don’t believe that I’d be working in academia, or, more specifically, American Studies, if it weren’t for my liberal studies training at Carthage. Its broad elective network and [Intellectual Foundations] suite taught me an interdisciplinary methodology for critical inquiry. Years later, I found my way into a field that is principally defined by this method.”
