Secondary Education

Kelsey McCluskey ’14 is majoring in history with a minor in secondary education to help other people enjoy the subject instead of dreading it. “Since the first history class I took at Carthage I knew I had chosen the right major because of how enthusiastic the professors are,” she said.

Kelsey loves everything about the history department, including the welcoming environment and the helpful professors. “The classes are always engaging and can help students from all the departments get a background on any era.”

After graduation, Kelsey would like to teach history in a middle school or a high school. She would also possibly want to teach in a different country. “Carthage is preparing me for that by connecting my history classes with broader present day issues. Through all the different required classes I have become more aware of other cultures, which makes it possible for me to pursue other interests as I am introduced to them.”

On-campus involvement: “I am involved in Pi Delta Chi, a service sorority; Phi Alpha Theta, the history honors fraternity; and Colleges Against Cancer where I am one of the entertainment committee heads.”

Favorite professor: “The whole history department is great!”

Favorite class: “My favorite class has been America in the 1960’s. It was so fun and allowed me to think outside the box for my final project. One of the most interesting aspects of this class was learning about a very well known time period and getting to apply this knowledge in a fun way to the final project.”

Toughest class: “My most difficult class so far was Medieval History because of my lack of background knowledge .”

Favorite moment at Carthage: “One of my favorite moments at Carthage is the Christmas Festival. I have volunteered to help for the past two years, and the sense of community that everyone has is amazing.”

Favorite spot on campus: “My favorite spot on campus is a tie between the bench by Lentz Hall looking out on the water and down by the beach. Both are really peaceful and let me relax after a long day of classes. I love how close Carthage is to the water. I never get sick of the view.”

Biggest surprise: “One of the biggest surprises about Carthage is how many people you meet and how many opportunities you have through all the organizations available at Carthage. I love hearing about all the different clubs and organizations there are.”

Advice for students considering history as a major: “My advice for anyone considering a history major is to talk to the professors. They are so helpful and they funny. Also, if you are no sure of an emphasis, take a lot of different history classes. That way you can figure out what kind of history you like the most.”
