Major(s)

Sociology

When deciding which college to attend, Kiston Lee chose Carthage because of the beautiful campus, the small size, and the integrity of the sports teams. He is a member of the men’s basketball team at Carthage and a sociology major. “If you’re a people person like I am, and want to help people no matter the age, sociology is a great major to have. It has a lot of different career paths as well.”

Career goal

“I hope to get my master’s degree in social work and play basketball overseas.”

How have Carthage faculty had an impact on your life or Carthage career?

“My favorite professor has been Sandra Bisciglia. She made me want to learn the material and has a great sense of humor. She also has one of the best teaching styles I’ve experienced. I’ve had two courses with her including Understandings of Religion and Women in the Bible.”

Favorite class

Marriage and Family taught by Kristin Pawlak was my favorite because it taught me a lot about marriage and family, and that life shouldn’t be taken for granted at any time.”

Campus involvement

“I’m on the men’s basketball team. Being a leader and having the opportunity to compete during every game is my favorite part. One of the best highlights of the season was seeing the smiles on our two seniors’ faces after the team pulled through with a victory on senior night. Those guys deserved it.”

Toughest class

Statistics was my toughest class because it was difficult to understand the concepts and theories. It all seemed foreign.”

Favorite moments and memories at Carthage

“I’ve shared a lot of fun memories with my family on the basketball team, and also with my roommates.”

Favorite spot on campus

“The Student Union is my favorite spot to hang out.”

Biggest surprise so far

“The weather here in Wisconsin. I’m from central Illinois so there’s a 15-20 degree increase in temperature there. I’ve never experienced the impact staying close to a great lake has on the wind chill and temperature.”

What would your 8-year-old self think of you now?

“I would’ve agreed with my path to follow my dreams and do what I’ve always wanted to do.”

Why should other students consider your major? What advice do you have for them?

“Make sure you have the heart for it because some things you may see, deal with, or conquer will not be pleasing. Also, keep in mind that you can’t help everyone.”
