Susan Mirsky began her undergraduate work as a journalism major, but a campus job at the daycare center changed all of that! Her work at the center and as a work assistant in the reading department office exposed her to a new world: the world of reading development. Susan was intrigued by the process of learning to read and by the multitude of strategies available to meet the needs of learners.

After completing her degree in education at Fort Hays University, she began her teaching career in a suburb of Kansas City, Kansas. She taught there for nearly a decade before moving to Wisconsin. Susan had the great fortune of exploring her passion for reading further at Carthage College, where she earned her Master of Education degree.

Teaching, says Susan, is in her heart, and she is passionate about learning ways to guide students to discover the power of reading. In her career as an educator, Susan taught all grades 1-12 in varying roles. Most of her years in the classroom were at the elementary level, but she also served as a reading teacher at the high school level and was an instructional coach at both the elementary and high school levels. Susan’s most recent position was as literacy coordinator for the Kenosha Unified School District, and she served in this capacity for over a decade.

At Carthage, Susan teaches the Curriculum and Instruction of Reading class and enjoys sharing how reading theory can be successfully applied in the classroom.

Susan recently retired from the Kenosha School District, and this development provides her with the opportunity for more travel. She and her husband have a goal to visit all the national parks with the intention of sprinkling in some international travel as well.
