Career goal
“I would love to go back to Illinois and start my career as an educator. My goal is to teach somewhere near where I grew up and be able to grow as an educator. I would also like to coach men’s volleyball at whatever high school I end up teaching.”
How have Carthage faculty had an impact on your life or Carthage career?
“The connection Carthage faculty have had in my career here has been immense. Every single professor I have had for both my major and minor has done everything they could to prepare me for my future career. Each department is its own community that pushes the best out of every student, and the personal feel of each class helps keep me on top of the work I have to do. Being a name and not a number to the professors has given me the power to grow as a student to become the best version of me I can be for my future career.”
Favorite class
“My favorite class I have taken so far has been Modern Caribbean: From Pirates to the Cuban Missile Crisis. The class took me through a different area of history than anything I have ever taken. As someone who is mainly interested in European history, learning about the Caribbean through stories of pirates and communism, slavery and mercantilism, and everything in between opened my eyes to the complexity of different kinds of history that exist in the world.”
Campus involvement
“Two of my major involvements in my time at Carthage have been the Carthage Activities Board and Delta Upsilon Social Fraternity. I’ve been most involved in Carthage Activities Board during the four years that I have been here. I have held many different leadership positions, which all helped me progress as a leader on this campus. The friendships I have made in Delta Upsilon are some of the best friendships I could have ever asked for. The service we do on this campus and the people we help have been some of the best opportunities that I wouldn’t have been able to do without Delta Upsilon.”
Toughest class
“The toughest class I took was Research Methods and Statistics II. I truly do not understand statistics no matter how hard I try, and if I didn’t have the professor I had, I truly think I wouldn’t have passed the class.”
Scholarships
“I did receive a Carthage scholarship all four years that I have been here. I received the Helwig Scholarship, which has made going to school here so much easier. As a first-generation student, being able to receive a scholarship such as this one has made it so much easier to make college here affordable.”
Favorite moments and memories at Carthage
“One of my favorite memories at Carthage was becoming Homecoming King my senior year. Being voted by my peers and getting the title of King was an amazing experience. Another amazing moment I had here at Carthage was sophomore year in general. I had to maneuver my learning through a pandemic and was still able to learn to the best of my ability. I believe COVID-19 has made me a better student, and it has helped me learn how I learn best.”
Favorite spot on campus
“My favorite spot on campus is the volleyball court behind The Tower. I love going out there (weather permitting) with friends and just having so much fun playing volleyball in the sand.”
Biggest surprise so far
“There is really only one answer for this, and that is COVID hitting my freshman year. The college experience I got was not what I expected when I was a freshman sitting in Orientation. I wouldn’t change it for the world, though. I believe it made me into the person I am today.”
What would your 8-year-old self think of you now?
“The 8-year-old self I see is the 8-year-old who is sitting in front of a TV watching the History Channel, and the 8-year-old who is sitting at my dad’s computer researching why Chicago was founded. I believe that 8-year-old me would be so amazed at how far I made it and how much I have accomplished.”
Why should other students consider your major? What advice do you have for them?
“Some advice I have for other students that are interested in history is just to do what you love. If history is something you love, it is something worth exploring at Carthage. The History Department is one of my favorite things about Carthage. All the professors are here for you to succeed, trying to understand you on a personal level. They all try their best to help you in whatever way they can, and they all assist you in your success. When it comes to the classes themselves, in all honesty, it can be a lot of reading. But to me, if there is any reading worth it, it is that of historical readings.”
Why Carthage?
“I chose Carthage because of the fact it was so close to home while also being far enough where I can grow independently. I also chose Carthage because of the family/community feel that I have definitely felt in my four years here. The small class sizes were a major draw, and the lake is a huge reason most people decide to go here.”
