“Before I even decided to attend Carthage, while visiting, I met Dr. Daniel Miller. I was able to attend a lab section of the Research Methods in Neuroscience class, where they were doing profusions. Afterwards, he took my mother and I to the cafeteria with some of his students and we talked about the current research, school, and life. Dr. Miller has been the most influential and encouraging person to me.”

“I have loved all of my classes at Carthage. From Beauty Will Save the World with Dr. Mitchell and Dr. Sklar, to Phage Hunters I and II with Dr. Byrnes, Chemistry with Dr. Morris, Intro to Neuroscience with Dr. Rademacher, Western Heritage I and II with Mr. Stoner and Dr. Gartner, Research Methods with Dr. Miller, and everything else, it has been a pleasure to be in class learning about interesting things with wonderful professors.”

“Over the summer of 2014, I went to Costa Rica with Dr. Miller and Dr. Hegrenes on a class trip about Brains, Behavior, and Biodiversity. We went for two weeks and stayed at different locations on the rainy side (east) of the country. It was a lot of fun and truly breathtaking to be able to go out in the rain forest at the La Suerte Biological Field Station most days. We were lucky and had no rain most of our days, but even when it did rain, we went outside, played soccer in the rain, went hiking (night hiking too), and had such an enjoyable time.”

“I have really loved my J-Term classes, Beauty Will Save the World and the trip to Costa Rica. In Beauty will Save the World, we went on a silent retreat to the DeKoven Center in Racine. The building architecture was beautiful and it was an amazing time to reflect on life and any thoughts that came passing by.”

“I love the downstairs part of the library, where the ceiling is really high and the windows are just as high. It creates an airy feeling of openness and calmness. It’s perfect for reading and studying.”

“The biggest surprise for me has been that I have a lot more free time than I expected. My free time, though, I devote to being active and riding my bike into the downtown area (when it’s not freezing), and participating in clubs and other activities, such as comedy nights and the improv shows.”

“My 8-year-old self would be glad to hear that I never lost my passion to question things and follow my passions. At 8 years old, I wanted to be so many things, from a doctor, to an astronaut, to a veterinarian, to a teacher.”

“If you are considering a neuroscience major, I recommend coming to Carthage because the one-on-one conversations you will have with your professors cannot be duplicated at any other school. As a neuro major, expect to put a lot of your biology, chemistry, and physics knowledge into context within the human nervous system. Expect to be fascinated by how everything works.”
