This travel course will offer a first-hand opportunity to study Tanzanian society, culture, and religion, particularly interfaith cooperation that has helped make Tanzania one of the most peaceful countries in Africa.

Traveling across northern Tanzania, you will have the opportunity to immerse in the abundantly diverse social, cultural, religious, and natural surroundings of Tanzania through formal discussions with Tanzanian professors, college students, religious leaders, and interaction with amazing local people; visiting contemporary sites that illustrate the great social, cultural, and religious abundance of Tanzania such as churches, mosques, temples; historical and cultural sites including the traditional villages of Chagga and Maasai people, marketplaces, museums, and colleges; observe and participate in indigenous music and dance; going on two-day/one-night safari pack in two of Tanzania’s most popular national parks namely Tarangire and Ngorongoro Crater — the largest intact caldera in the world; visiting Olduvai Gorge (also known as ‘the cradle of humankind’), an exceptionally rich archaeological site in Tanzania that preserves one of the best records of human history spanning nearly 2 million years, thus holding the earliest evidence of the existence of human ancestors; serving others at a chosen site; sunbathing at the pristine, warm sandy Indian Ocean beaches, and after-hours enjoyment in local restaurants and entertainment venues.

Students will visit the cities of Arusha and Moshi and nearby villages located at the lush foothills of mighty Mount Kilimanjaro, then down to the bustling Indian Ocean coastal city of Dar es Salaam and over the Spice Island of Zanzibar and birthplace of Freddie Mercury.

This study tour fulfills the following general education requirements: GH, ITL, FAR, and CS.

All participants must submit a nonrefundable deposit of $500 with their application; proof of purchase of optional Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) travel insurance or signed Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) insurance release form must be submitted within 21 days of making the initial deposit.

Study tour fee includes group airfare from Chicago O’Hare International Airport to Kilimanjaro International Airport in Tanzania; airport transfers, meals, hotel accommodations in double or triple rooms with WiFi; ground transport, safari and excursions, ferry ticket, admissions to museums, parks, cultural, and historical sites.
