Major(s)

Chemistry (Pre-Pharmacy)

Janet Haro ’18 has always been interested in science and math, and once she decided to go to school for pre-pharmacy, she knew Carthage was the right choice. “I chose Carthage because I loved the program they had for my major. The small class sizes that Carthage offers are very beneficial and the professors really care about their students’ success.”

Since being at Carthage, Janet has been involved in Pre-Health Club which has aided her in thinking about her long-term goals. “In Pre-Health Club we’ve discussed graduate school, plans after Carthage, and speakers have come in to speak about opportunities at specific schools.”

Janet plans to become a pharmacist so she can incorporate the passion she has for science into her everyday life. “I want to treat illnesses and help individuals feel better. Pharmacy gives me the opportunity to make a difference in treating others.”

“The small class sizes that Carthage offers are very beneficial and the professors really care about their students’ success.”

Career goal

“I hope to become a pharmacist.”

How have Carthage faculty had an impact on your life or Carthage career?

Christine Blaine has had an impact on my Carthage career because she is just so friendly. When she heard I was a chemistry major, she wanted to sit with me to talk about the classes I would need for the rest of my college career. She didn’t have to do that, so I deeply appreciated it. Because of that, I realized how much the professors at Carthage do care about their students’ success.”

Favorite class

“My favorite class has been General Chemistry II because my professor was very funny and she made the material easy to understand.”

Campus involvement

“I belong to the Pre-Health Club where we’ve discussed graduate school and other plans after Carthage. Speakers have also come in to speak about opportunities at specific schools.”

Toughest class

“My toughest class so far has been Western Heritage. In the class you have to analyze a lot of book sections to understand the story’s full meaning. This is not one of my strengths, but because we had to do it in this class, I was able to understand the assigned readings much better.”

Opportunities at Carthage

“Through Pre-Health Club I had to opportunity to volunteer at the Go Red Heart Run/Walk.”

Favorite moments and memories at Carthage

“One of my favorite moments at Carthage was meeting my Resident Assistant for the first time. She came into my dorm to say hello and introduce herself, and ended up staying and talking with my roommate and I for a long time. She was very friendly and funny so I felt very comfortable being part of my floor knowing I could go to her whenever I needed to talk.”

Favorite spot on campus

“One of my favorite spots is actually my dorm, Tarble Hall, because it has a view of the lake. Also, my friends come in all the time just to hang out with my roommate and me.”

Biggest surprise so far

“The biggest surprise so far has been seeing how well my roommate and I get along. We had never met before Carthage and just ended up getting paired together so I’m very pleased.”

What would your 8-year-old self think of you now?

“I think my 8-year-old-self would be in awe that I’m studying to become a pharmacist because I don’t think that I ever really gave thought to the future. I just knew that I enjoyed math and science in elementary school.”
