Natalie Miller ’16 fell in love with the teaching scene at a young age and has never once changed her mind about majoring in elementary education.

The junior from Johnsburg, Ill. has had countless teachers who have shown her their passion and enthusiasm for teaching, and Natalie hopes to impact her future students as much as her teachers have impacted her. “Majoring in elementary education is such a rewarding experience. Being a teacher gives you the opportunity to motivate and inspire students in countless ways.”

As a Carthage student, Natalie enjoys volunteering with the Education Department and is on the Carthage Red Hots dance team.

“Carthage had everything I was looking for and more. It’s small, close to home, and has a beautiful view.”

Career goal

“After graduation, I hope to teach in an elementary or middle school.”

How have Carthage faculty had an impact on your life or Carthage career?

Jacqueline Easley has definitely had a positive impact on my Carthage career. Her passion and enthusiasm for teaching is immeasurable. She continuously challenges me to think outside of the box and pushes me to be the best teaching candidate I can be. I know I can count on her for guidance both now and in the future.”

Favorite class

Intensive Spanish Encounter has been my favorite class at Carthage so far. It gave me the opportunity to improve my conversational skills by interacting with the Hispanic community in Wisconsin.”

Campus involvement

In addition to being on the dance team, “I also do volunteer work within the Education Department such as Seuss-a-thon and Battle of the Books.”

Toughest class

“So far, my toughest class has been Faith, Love, and Ethics. It focuses on the nature and bases of morality as informed by the Bible dealing with sexuality, divorce, war, etc. This class was challenging because it required a completely open mind.”

Opportunities at Carthage

“I have been a member of the Carthage Red Hots dance team for two years. We perform at every home football and basketball game.”

Favorite moments and memories at Carthage

“Some of my favorite memories come from dancing on the Red Hots. I love being a part of the Carthage community and promoting school spirit.”

Favorite spot on campus

“My favorite spot on campus is the dance studio.”

Biggest surprise so far

“My biggest surprise so far has been how genuine the professors are. They always go above and beyond to ensure students’ success.”

What would your 8-year-old self think of you now?

“My 8-year-old self would be proud of the career path I have chosen. I fell in love with the teaching scene at a very young age and I’ve never once changed my mind.”

Why should other students consider your major? What advice do you have for them?

“My advice to other students considering a major in education would be to ignore the stereotypes. Teaching is in no way an easy job. It requires a great deal of patience, perseverance, and dedication.”
