Algonquin, Illinois

Major(s)

Criminal Justice and Sociology

Karra Pessetti decided she wanted to attend Carthage after learning about the small class sizes and experiencing the community feel on campus. At Carthage, Karra studies criminal justice and sociology because “both subjects can be used to help others,” which is something she has always been interested in.

“My majors are exciting because they give you the opportunity to explore ideas and ask questions that other majors may not permit.”

Along with her studies, Karra is involved in Chi Omega and works an on-campus job at the Health and Counseling Center. “So far, my experiences on campus have been amazing!”

As Karra heads into her final years at Carthage, she “can’t believe [her] time here is more than halfway complete.” Though she is unsure where life after college will take her, she is loving the experiences Carthage has given her.

“Have fun while you’re here and with your major. College is a time to ask questions and explore different paths. It’s OK to lay any ideas you may have on the table.”

Career goal

“My hope is to find a career that makes me excited to go to work each and every day.”

How have Carthage faculty had an impact on your life or Carthage career?

Rick Matthews is one professor who has had an impact on my Carthage career. His Sociological Inquiry class was eye-opening, and it has really helped develop my writing skills.”

Favorite class

“One of my favorite classes was Marriage and the Family. It was a fun course because it gave me a raw perspective of how males and females think and act. The professor also brought in a lot of guest speakers to make the course more realistic.”

Campus involvement

“I am a member of Chi Omega at Carthage and have had the opportunity to have leadership positions within this organization. Other than Greek Life, I have an on-campus job at the Health and Counseling Center.”

Toughest class

“My toughest class so far has been Intro to Neuroscience. Without having a prior neuroscience background, I took the class as my non-lab requirement. Although it was challenging, I ended up loving the class.”

Favorite moments and memories at Carthage

“My favorite Carthage memories have been the times I have spent with my friends. Homecoming, Greek Week activities, and the all-campus BBQ are just a few of the events that have made my junior year so fulfilling.”

Favorite spot on campus

“When the weather is nice, my favorite spot is down by the beach. Sometimes after class I will bring my homework down there and just hang out.”

Biggest surprise so far

“So far, the biggest surprise I have had is how fast college seems to be flying by. I can’t believe my time at Carthage is more than halfway complete.”

What would your 8-year-old self think of you now?

“I think my 8-year-old self would think my career path was pretty cool. Both criminal justice and sociology can be used to help others, which is something I have always been interested in.”

Why should other students consider your major? What advice do you have for them?

“I would tell them to have fun with it. Discussions might get serious at times, but college is a time to ask questions and explore different paths. It is OK to lay any ideas you may have on the table.”
