Kamal Singh
Biography
Kamal Singh was born and raised in a small town in Illinois, about 45 minutes from Chicago, making her a huge fan of Chicago sports teams. Ms. Singh’s family and faith are her biggest motivations.
Ms. Singh had a unique undergrad experience. She started at a community college as an early childhood education major, which was a great start to her college career. She then transferred to a private institution in Chicago, changed her major to political science, and fell in love with learning about policies and governmental procedures. However, with being a commuter and finding it hard to connect on campus, she decided to transfer to her Aluma Mater, Northern Illinois University (NIU). She felt so much more support for commuting students at NIU. She was able to connect with her peers and professors in a way that allowed her to push through college for three more years. She graduated in December 2021 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, with minors in LGBTQ+ studies and nonprofit and NGO studies.
Ms. Singh has always been a big advocate for students and wanted to be in an educational environment. So, when she found out about the Higher Education and Student Affairs Graduate Program at NIU, she applied and was accepted. Ms. Singh received a graduate assistantship with Housing and Residential Services, where she was fortunate to use what she was learning in the classroom and apply it to the role. Ms. Singh also interned at The Gender and Sexuality Resource Center at NIU, where she researched living-learning communities and facilitating onboarding for LGBTQ+ students. She also helped plan programs and projects for the center around campus. With all of that experience, that is how Ms. Singh found Carthage.
